We are asking you to contact the Borough Assembly to support funding for planning a multi-use indoor training facility. We want to make sure the needs of the tennis and pickle ball communities are taken into account!
- The military is pledging $250,000 to help fund the planning process.
- They are asking FNSB to contribute $50,000 to the cost of the planning phase.
- The Borough Assembly will vote on this September 13.
- If you think FNSB should accept this 5 to 1 match (!!!), please let the Borough know as soon as possible.
On August 20 Fairbanks Tennis Association (FTA) representatives attended a meeting to learn what is being proposed as a joint venture between the military on Ft. Wainwright and the FNSB for a joint-use indoor facility. FTA is asking you to email a letter of support in favor of this as soon as possible.
Here is the background:
Brittany Smart, Special Project Assistant to the Borough Mayor, Robert Wallace, a Planning Strategist from Ft. Wainwright, and Allison Long, Director of Park & Rec. on Ft. Wainwright presented Ordinance No 2018-20-1H to the Borough’s Advisory Commission Members. The Ordinance requests $50,000 from FNSB general fund for a Joint U.S. Army Garrison and FNSB Recreational/Athletic Facility Planning Charrette and Implementation Plan. [Charrette: a meeting in which all stakeholders in a project attempt to resolve conflicts and map solutions.]
The Ordinance was to be introduced at a work session of the FNSB finance committee August 24, 2018. Assuming it is pushed forward, the Ordinance will be discussed on September 6, 2018, then placed on the agenda of the Borough Assembly meeting September 13, 2018 for PUBLIC comment. Please see the Ordinance attachment.
The military is trying to provide an appropriate indoor training facility along with partnering with public use. The location of such a facility would hopefully be on military land, near the perimeter of the base.
This project is in the talking stage; what will be included within the facility, the size, how it is operated and more details are yet to be determined.
FTA is urging letters of support be emailed to Mayor Kassel and all of the Assembly Members BEFORE SEPTEMBER 12.
We have a stronger voice if more emails of support are sent to Mayor Kassel and the Borough Assembly.
The email addresses of Borough Mayor Kassel and the Borough Assembly are below as are the aforementioned presenters.
FTA is trying to get signatures from middle school tennis and high school tennis players and parents in the next week.
FTA has notified Danny Martin, Sports Director of the News-Miner, to ensure media coverage in the newspaper; he agreed to coordinate with Amanda Bohman who covers the News-Miner’s Borough business.
Please consider attending the Borough Assembly meeting on 9/13/18 to show your support of this Ordinance!
Regarding the letter of support, please consider the following:
- Interior AK has a need for indoor tennis courts since NONE ARE AVAILABLE LOCALLY; the nearest is more than 400 miles away. FTA is limited to summer/early fall programming due to lack of facilities; with indoor tennis courts, FTA could hold after-school programming, play/train year-round, foster competitive tennis for players of all ages, and continue to see Fairbanks-trained players scholarship in college tennis.
- Indoor tennis courts would also enable pickle ball players to play year-round; two to four pickle ball courts fit on one tennis court.
- Children, adults, seniors, friends and families of our community could recreate together year-round, lifelong to enrich our quality of life in Interior Alaska.
- Indoor tennis courts could improve our community’s ability to recruit and retain professionals and their families.

September 1, 2018
Dear Honorable Mayor Kassel and FNSB Assembly Members,
I am writing in support of Ordinance No 2018-20-1H for appropriating $50,000.00 for a Joint U.S. Army Garrison (USAG) and the FNSB Planning Recreational/Athletic Facility Planning Charrette and & Implementation Plan.
Our community needs an indoor recreation facility. We know the Borough cannot afford to accomplish this task without support. With a match of five to one in planning dollars, we cannot afford to pass up this opportunity.
Our community needs indoor tennis courts since NONE ARE AVAILABLE in the Interior; the nearest is 400+ miles away.
Fairbanks Tennis Association is limited to summer/early fall programming due to lack of facilities; with indoor tennis courts, FTA could hold after-school programming, play/train year-round, foster competitive tennis for players of all ages, and continue to see Fairbanks-trained players scholarship in college tennis.
Indoor tennis courts would also enable pickle ball players to play year-round; two to four pickle ball courts fit on one tennis court.
Children, adults, seniors, friends and families of our community could recreate together year-round, lifelong to enrich our quality of life in Interior Alaska.
Indoor tennis courts may improve our community’s ability to recruit and retain professionals and their families.
Ordinance No 2018-20-1H addresses the need of such a facility. I am delighted to hear that this joint venture is being proposed and I support it.
I truly hope this Ordinance is passed, these funds are appropriated, and the Planning begins as soon as possible.
